Vision Testing for Your Driver's License
New York requires proof of adequate vision to hold or renew a driver's license, and many drivers need to submit a vision test form completed by a licensed eye care provider. At Ace Medical Care, we offer DMV vision certification exams so you can complete this requirement quickly, accurately, and without the runaround.
Who Needs a DMV Vision Certification?
You may be asked to have your vision certified by an eye doctor if:
- You failed or were unable to complete the vision screening at the DMV.
- Your license renewal notice specifically requests a vision exam from an eye care provider.
- You wear corrective lenses and the DMV needs updated confirmation of your corrected vision.
- You are applying for a commercial driver's license with additional vision standards.
What Happens During the Exam
Our DMV vision certification exam is straightforward. Dr. Tara Damani or a member of our optometry team will test your visual acuity (with and without corrective lenses, as applicable) and check your peripheral vision, both of which the DMV uses to determine whether you meet the minimum vision standard for driving.
- Visual acuity testing: Reading an eye chart to measure how clearly you see at distance.
- Peripheral (side) vision testing: Confirming your field of view meets the state's minimum requirement.
- Completion of your DMV form: We fill out and sign the official vision report or form you bring with you, or provide documentation you can submit to the DMV.
What to Bring
- Any vision report form provided by the DMV.
- Your current glasses or contact lenses, if you wear them.
- A form of identification.

If Your Vision Doesn't Meet the Standard
If testing shows your vision doesn't currently meet the state's driving standard, we'll talk through your options, which may include an updated eyeglass or contact lens prescription. Our on-site optical shop can often get you into new corrective lenses quickly, so you can be retested and get back on the road.
Combine It With a Full Eye Exam
Since you're already coming in, it's a good opportunity to have a complete eye exam at the same time. This lets us check your overall eye health, not just the specific measures the DMV requires, and update your prescription if it's changed.
