Not every spot, bump, or discoloration in or around the eye is cause for alarm, but any new or changing growth deserves a professional look. Ocular tumor evaluation is a careful examination of the eyelid, the surface of the eye, or the structures inside the eye to determine what a growth is, whether it needs treatment, and whether it should be monitored over time.
What Is an Ocular Tumor Evaluation?
An ocular tumor evaluation is a detailed eye exam focused on a specific area of concern, such as a growth on the eyelid, a pigmented or raised area on the surface of the eye, or a finding identified inside the eye during a dilated exam. Most growths around the eye are benign, but because some can indicate something more serious, a thorough evaluation helps determine the right next step, whether that is watchful monitoring, further imaging, or referral for treatment.
What We Evaluate
- Eyelid growths: bumps, lesions, or areas of skin change on or near the eyelid
- Conjunctival lesions: pigmented spots or growths on the clear or white surface of the eye
- Intraocular findings: pigmented spots or masses inside the eye, often found on a dilated exam
- Orbital concerns: changes in the appearance or position of the eye that may point to a growth behind it
When to Have a Growth Evaluated
- A new spot, freckle, or discoloration on or around the eye
- A growth that has changed in size, shape, or color
- A bump on the eyelid that is growing, bleeding, or not healing
- A pigmented area inside the eye noted during a routine eye exam
- Any new bulging, displacement, or asymmetry of the eye
What to Expect During Your Visit
Examination
Your provider will examine the growth closely, often with magnification, and may dilate your eyes to check for any findings inside the eye. Photographs may be taken to document the size and appearance of a lesion so it can be tracked over time.
Monitoring or Further Steps
Many growths are simply monitored with periodic follow-up exams to confirm they remain stable. When a finding needs a closer look, we coordinate additional imaging or refer for biopsy or specialized treatment as appropriate.
