Vision testing — sometimes called refraction testing — is the process of measuring exactly how well you see and determining what corrective lenses, if any, would sharpen your vision. It's a core part of any eye exam and the basis for every eyeglass or contact lens prescription we write. Whether you've never needed glasses before or you're due for an updated prescription, vision testing gives us the precise numbers behind your correction.
What Vision Testing Involves
Vision testing combines a few different measurements to build a complete, accurate picture of how you see:
- Visual Acuity Testing: Reading an eye chart to measure how clearly you see letters at a standard distance, both up close and far away.
- Refraction: Looking through a series of lenses (often with a device called a phoropter) while your provider fine-tunes the strength needed to bring things into focus.
- Astigmatism Check: Identifying whether the surface of your eye has an irregular curve that affects clarity at all distances.
- Binocular Vision and Eye Coordination: Checking how well your two eyes work together and focus as a team.
- Color Vision Screening: A simple test to check for color vision deficiencies, when appropriate.

What to Expect During Your Visit
Vision testing is quick, comfortable, and doesn't involve any needles or discomfort. You'll be asked to read letters from an eye chart at a distance, then look through a series of lens options while your provider asks "which is clearer, one or two?" This back-and-forth helps zero in on your exact prescription. The whole process is typically a routine part of a comprehensive eye exam, so your provider can also check your overall eye health at the same visit.
Getting the Most Accurate Results
- Bring your current glasses and/or contact lenses to your appointment.
- Let your provider know about any symptoms — blurriness at distance vs. up close, headaches, or difficulty with night driving.
- If you wear contact lenses, ask whether you should remove them before testing, since they can temporarily affect the shape of your cornea.
After Your Vision Test
Once your testing is complete, your provider will review your results with you and explain your prescription in plain language.
