Vision Therapy

Retraining How the Eyes and Brain Work Together

Good vision isn't just about seeing clearly — it's about how well your eyes work together and communicate with your brain. When that coordination isn't functioning as it should, it can lead to difficulties with reading, focusing, depth perception, or eye strain that glasses alone can't fix. Vision therapy is a structured program designed to address these underlying visual skills.

What Is Vision Therapy?

Vision therapy is a personalized program of guided exercises and activities aimed at improving how the eyes team together, focus, and track. It begins with a thorough binocular vision assessment to identify exactly which visual skills need support.

What a Binocular Vision Assessment Includes

  • Eye Teaming Evaluation: Checking how well both eyes work together as a coordinated pair.
  • Focusing (Accommodation) Testing: Assessing how easily and accurately the eyes shift focus between distances.
  • Eye Tracking Assessment: Evaluating how smoothly the eyes follow moving targets or move across a page while reading.
  • Depth Perception Testing: Measuring how well the two eyes combine information to judge distance.
  • Discussion of Symptoms: Reviewing any struggles with reading, headaches, double vision, or visual fatigue.

Who Can Benefit From Vision Therapy

Vision therapy can be helpful for children and adults experiencing:

  • Difficulty with reading or losing their place frequently
  • Eye strain, headaches, or fatigue with near work
  • Double vision or trouble maintaining focus
  • Poor eye coordination or a lazy eye (amblyopia)
  • Difficulty tracking moving objects, which can affect sports performance

Because these issues aren't always caught on a standard vision screening, a dedicated binocular vision assessment is often the first step toward understanding what's really going on.

What to Expect During Your Assessment

Your visit will start with a conversation about the symptoms or difficulties you or your child have been experiencing — whether that's trouble reading, headaches, or general visual discomfort. Your provider will then perform a series of tests to evaluate how your eyes team, focus, and track together, separate from a standard visual acuity check.

Based on the results, your provider will explain what they found and whether a structured vision therapy program is recommended. If so, they'll outline what that program generally involves and what progress might look like over time.

A Team-Based Approach

Vision-related learning and reading difficulties can sometimes overlap with other developmental or educational factors, so we encourage open communication between our team, your child's teachers, and other healthcare providers involved in their care, to make sure everyone is working from the same picture.
